The couple stood beside their car, staring at the large brick building before them. Not much had changed since their departure many years ago - the flagpole still stood in the circle of green, surrounded by rows of flowers and bushes, and the weathervane at the top of the cupola still swayed with the slightest breath of wind, It was early, for the yellow busses had not yet begun to circle the front of the building, and the man and woman had had no difficulty in finding a parking space on the long, narrow street.

"Funny how things change, but remain"

He sighed, taking note of the first signs of the morning sun reflecting a halo about the corner of the school.

"I know..."

Her voice trailed off, and her thoughts flew to the drab green hallways she had known as the high school's when she was a freshman. Ninth graders were generally not allowed to wander through the main high school building; she could remember walking through the halls of the Junior High, a part of the masses who ran and talked and laughed on the way to class each day between soundings of bells. They walked about the tarred circular road, sat upon long concrete stairs, and watched cars scurry north and south of the edifice. The couple rose and continued their tour, first completing the semi-circle, and then turning towards the rear of the structure. They stopped at a heavy iron fence: the man rested one foot on the wall which held the rails, and the woman sat and peered through the bars. Their junior year ... Driving permits ... Chemistry ... The pair looked about them, and then continued on. They passed the tennis courts, and then walked down a long stairway to the bleachers. They walked to the center of the benches, and looked upon the great football field, chattering eagerly. Seniors ... "Rocky" ... Magazine sales ... Football games ... WINNIE-THE-POOH ... He took her hand, and they strode up the long, steep stairs and through the opening in the fence encircling the property to their car, noting the white scrawls of "Class of 2OO3" and "Class of 2004" written on the blacktop, along with the artists’ initials. They entered their car, and gazed back at the structure; he turned the ignition, and saw a row of yellow busses turning in the street. He lowered the visor above him to shield his eyes from the sun, smiled at the woman beside him, and drove down the Street, past the field, onto the main highway.
